Parenting has been called “the highest yoga”, and for good reason. Where else do you have the challenge and opportunity to be your most mindful at each moment? Where your every communication has the potential to create conflict or upliftment? Children respond either consciously or unconsciously to the vibratory energy of each moment. Much of the time, we adults have lost our sensitivity to the energy that vibrates between us all. Children can make us painfully aware of our gaps in awareness.

More and more professionals who work with Disorders of Sensory Integration (DSI), such as autism, learning disabilities, and ADHD are being trained in children’s yoga with great results. There is a natural affinity between these children and yoga, since yoga addresses the whole child, including the brain/body connection.

How does yoga help children with ADHD, Autism, or Disorder of Sensory Integration?

  • Activates beneficial stimulation of glands to secrete hormones which tell the body to relax and the mind to stay steady
  • Beneficial effect on energy flow and arousal level
  • Uses bilateral movements (e.g. weight bearing, rotation, core muscles) to balance brain hemispheres and affect mood.
  • Helps to organize and relax the nervous system. Once this is achieved higher-level cognitive skills can be accessed.
